Steve Gemell has more than 35 years’ experience in the mining industry, having worked throughout Australasia and in Africa, North and South America, Asia, Eastern and Western Europe. He has been Principal of Gemell Mining Engineers, an independent multi-discipline consultancy, since its formation in Kalgoorlie in 1984.
The consultancy specialises in mineral property assessment, valuations, technical audits, strategic studies, operational troubleshooting, hard rock mine planning and design, feasibility studies and expert witness.
His experience includes operational management in underground and open pit mining in positions from shift boss to resident manager, which has also involved the supervision of CIP/CIL, flotation and alluvial plants. He has subsequently held executive and non executive directorships, including the positions of CEO and Chairman, in listed mining companies. He has additionally held an appointment as Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales and is currently a member of the VALMIN Committee.
He is currently non-executive chairman of Golden Cross Resources Limited, and non-executive director of Argent Minerals Limited, Eastern Iron Limited, Indochine Mining Limited and UCL Resources Limited.
He is a fellow of the AusIMM, a Chartered Professional (Mining) and a Member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers.

Peter graduated from Sydney University in 1967 with a Batchelor of Science Honours degree and has worked continuously as a practising geologist in numerous roles in Australia and overseas. He has extensive knowledge and experience in exploration, development and production aspects of the mining industry using a wide variety of geological and geophysical techniques; supervision and implementation of large exploration programs with annual budgets in excess of AU$18 million; provision of technical and commercial advice to client companies; target generation and country studies; exploration and evaluation of numerous deposit styles and commodities in a wide variety of geographical and geopolitical environments.
Peter is a former member of the VALMIN committee.
He has commercial experience in the negotiation of a large and diverse range of joint venture and acquisition/divestment agreements; preparation of technical reports for public documents such as prospectuses, information memoranda and documents associated with mergers, acquisitions and divestments; involvement in due diligence studies and reviews; negotiation with government departments; preparation of mining and exploration project valuations; involvement in the formation and subsequent public listing of an exploration company.
Peter was instrumental in the formation of an ASX-listed Mineral Exploration Company – Equatorial Resources Limited. He has been General Manager-Exploration of a mid-sized mining and exploration company with a geological staff of over 50 professionals, a member of the executive management committee overseeing the company’s production and exploration operations and is the Managing Director of his own mining industry consulting company.

Karl Guilfoyle is a Mining Engineer with 29 years of experience in the mining industry, specialising in underground hardrock mine planning and operations.
Karl established Guilfoyle Engineering & Mining Services Pty Ltd in 1991, to provide an independent consulting service to the mining industry. He is a Member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and has written and presented several technical papers at mining industry conferences. His skills include:

  • Understanding the mining business, with a focus on safe and profitable production.
  • Experience in a broad range of underground hardrock mines with diverse conditions.
  • Mine planning and design, from initial conceptual studies to the final critical details.
  • Assessment of mining performance and costs, and identification of the major issues.

  • Analysis of underground mining systems, from planning to final stoping results and costs.
  • Calculation of break-even mine head grades to optimise profitable recovery of ore resources.
  • Preparation of computer models to calculate, analyse and compare total mine production costs.
  • Preparation of practical geotechnical standards for mine development and longhole open stoping.
  • Selection of equipment for diamond drilling, mine development, stoping, loading and rock transport.
  • Analysis and optimisation of underground mine jumbo development drilling and blasting practices.
  • Introduction of cemented rock backfill to increase resource recovery and reduce total mining costs.
  • Design and analysis of alternative raise development methods, including longhole drilling and blasting.
  • Innovative solutions for unusual mining applications, including specialised blasting techniques.
  • Introduction of underground road trains to improve productivity and reduce total mining costs.
