Dr John Bryan

John Bryan, now Executive Chairman, was Managing Director of McElroy Bryan Geological Services Pty Ltd (MBGS) from 1979 to 1997. He joined that consulting group in 1970 following several years of post graduate study and a period of regional mapping with the NSW Geological Survey. Since 1970 he has been involved with numerous coal exploration and coal mining ventures, mostly in Australia but also overseas. Recent assignments, personally undertaken by John, have included a large number of coal resources and reserves audits, assessments of coal exploration areas in NSW and Queensland, appraisals of operating coal mines and reviews of coal exploration programs.
Overall supervision of the geological staff at MBGS for 20 years, and assistance with a wide range of exploration programs, has provided a very comprehensive background of coal resources and reserves in Australia. Clients over the last 10 years have included major corporations involved with coal mining, small companies undertaking grassroots exploration, and consulting engineers.

Mr Colin Donegan
Mining EngineerColmine ConsultingMining Engineer

Colin Donegan joined the mining industry in 1976 as a trainee mining engineer with Elcom Collieries at Newstan Colliery. In 1981 he graduated top of all streams of engineering at UNSW and was awarded the Institution of Engineers Australia Award for his efforts.
By 1982, Colin had obtained his 1st and 2nd Class Coal Mine Manager’s and Mine Deputy’s Certificates. In 1983 he relocated to Western Australia to gain valuable Open Cut experience at Griffin Coal’s Muja Mine, which was then, the deepest black coal open cut in the world, operating the world’s largest fleet of hydraulic excavators.
Colin was appointed as Assistant Superintendent at Wambo in 1986 with operational and planning responsibilities for the Underground, Open cut and Preparation Plant. During his nine years there, Colin developed and implemented the plans to take that operation from 1.2 to 4.0 million tonnes per annum, preparing and administering the contracts involved. He also served a total of six months as Acting General Manager.
In 1995 Colin was appointed Manager of the Glendell Project, modifying the Development Consent, progressing all mine approvals, completing the mine planning and selecting the equipment and contractor. Unfortunately this project was deferred due to prevailing coal prices at the end of 1997. Colin now has his own consulting company and is pursuing a number of coal mine developments in his own right.
He has a wealth of senior experience with 21 years at Manager level or above. He has exceptional skills in mine planning, industrial relations, equipment selection and management. He is also well known for his innovative approach and lateral thinking to problem solving.
Colin’s greatest asset is the depth to his very broad experience, allowing him to view a problem from a very broad perspective but at the same time understanding the detail involved, resulting in solutions to problems that encompass all contributing factors.

Mr John Elliston

John Elliston, Senior Research Associate and Consultant, has extensive experience in exploration and successful mineral development. During many years of active exploration and while directing major exploration, mining, and geophysical companies, new basic research into the origin, mode of transport, and concentration of ore minerals was initiated. Highly successful technical results achieved in the completion of recent research contracts now enables a realistic identification of the geological factors, which indicate potential economic mineralisation.
Research findings can be applied to assist decisions on area and prospect selection and the significance of partly delineated mineralisation.

  • Interpretation of geological data
  • Recognition of the significance of mineral indications
  • Assistance with decisions to continue or curtail drilling
  • Review of geological data and assessment of its adequacy
  • Assessment of ‘prospectivity’.

By arrangement, seminars or staff training courses on:-
The basic concepts of the formation of orebodies and the rocks from which they are derived.
