Doug has specialised in mineral processing and the chemical processing of minerals (hydrometallurgy). After graduating in metallurgy from the University of NSW in 1972, he worked seven years with King Island Scheelite and its sister company Warman International. This time was spent in the mineral processing and hydrometallurgy of scheelite in both plant operation and technical support. He was involved in the test work (including piloting), design, commissioning and operation of a plant producing synthetic scheelite and molybdenum sulphide byproduct. During this period, Doug obtained a M.Eng.Sc.(Chemical Engineering) from the University of Newcastle. The thesis topic was on phase separation aids in solvent extraction.
In 1979 Doug moved to the United Kingdom where he worked with Murex, eventually as head of a small process development department working on the hydrometallurgy of W, Mo, Va and Cr. His activities involved technical support to the plant and process development in all aspects of processing ranging from final stages in mineral processing to chemicals and refractory metal production.
In 1982 Doug moved to Frankfurt, Germany where he worked with Lurgi in the process development laboratory on pilot plant studies on synthetic rutile production and on testwork and technical development in the treatment of complex sulphides and gold. On returning to Australia in 1985, Doug worked for five years with Australia Wide Industries (including Topalite Resources and Centaur Mining) on the production of mullite refractory and fluoride chemicals from topaz containing silexite and on the technical development of a few gold operations. This work included the design and operation of a mineral processing and ceramics processing pilot facility and supervision of testwork and some design aspects of newly developing gold operations including the Plutonic project in W.A.
After a couple of years as a private consultant in gold and base metal processing, Doug joined the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas Heights, Sydney, in 1993 as a senior technical officer. This has involved testwork, up to pilot scale, in support of the mining industry, where mineral processing and extractive metallurgy entails treatment of ores and intermediates containing radioactivity. Bench to pilot scale studies have been carried out for example for the Mt Weld rare earthýs project, the Kintyre uranium project and in support of the currently operating Olympic Dam and Ranger Uranium mines.
